Atlanta, Georgia. 05/04/2015

James ThurstonG3ict – the Global Initiative for Inclusive Information and Communication Technologies – a digital inclusion and human rights advocacy organization launched in 2006 at the initiative of the United Nations – has named James Thurston, the former Director of International Accessibility Policy at the Microsoft Corporation, as Vice President for Global Strategy and Development, effective May 4.

“The addition of James is a big step forward into the future for G3ict,” said Axel Leblois, founder and President of G3ict. “His passion for the rights of persons with disabilities around the world and his deep knowledge of the global technology industry are exactly the kind of expertise that G3ict will use to continue pushing for broader and deeper global implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. We are excited to bring that unique talent to the G3ict executive team.”

Thurston will lead the development of new worldwide advocacy strategies and programs to scale up G3ict’s global impact leveraging its global network of experts.

“James’ unique experience will help us design new programs in support of our advocacy work in cooperation with industry, government and organizations of persons with disabilities. We are very pleased that G3ict will benefit from James’ long time involvement in promoting ICT accessibility at a time when so many organizations around the world are seeking support,” said Francesca Cesa Bianchi, Vice President of Institutional Relations for G3ict since its inception.

Thurston has more than 20 years of technology policy and program management experience with the last 14 focused almost exclusively on international disability and technology issues. Immediately prior to joining G3ict, Thurston was Director of International Accessibility Policy at Microsoft, where he developed and executed a global strategy to expand the company’s outreach on disability and technology issues to governments and NGOs around the world.

“I am passionate about technology as an engine to address important social and economic challenges,” said Thurston. “I have been a longtime supporter of G3ict’s leading-edge work around the world on behalf of the more than 1 billion people with some form of disability and I am looking forward to the opportunity now to help build on its success from the inside.”
