In 2004, a group of 10 individuals in Italy started the Mobile Wireless Accessibility (MWA) project under the auspices of IBM Italy and consequently introduced the concept of the SmartPhone. The SmartPhone incorporates complete voice, data, and video convergence and could one day possibly replace traditional desk phones.
MWA is currently investigating what problems a visually impaired user may encounter while using this technology, as voice interface is the most important aspect for improving accessibility. The MWA project has five main applications:
1. Technology adoption for disabled persons
2. Endorse and demonstrate wireless and mobile frameworks
3. New services and related business opportunities
4. Convergent IP Solutions: new models and perspectives
5. Presence and location
Accessibility depends on the integration between hardware, software, and its mobility. To this end, partners such as IBM, ASPHI, Cisco, Nokia, and Talks are collaborating to produce a result that will converge Internet and cellular technologies to produce a product that will enable all users to better handle public environments.
